Directive 96/92/EC of 19 December 1996 concerning common rules for the internal market in electricity
The directive obliges Member States to reorganise their electricity market, separating from an accounting and legal point of view the production, transmission and distribution activities which were until now all handled by one monopolistic body, in order to introduce a liberalised electricity supply market at European level (open to competition)
Directive 2001/77/EC of 27 September 2001
This directive concerns measures necessary to comply with the Kyoto Protocol and aims to reduce the European Community's greenhouse gas emissions. It forces member states to integrate in their energy policy the development of renewable energy sources to meet the objective of 22.1% of consumption by 2010.
